Labels:

Simple word to describe this field is "Consultancy". Many big pharmaceutical companies rather than spending lot of money to address specific problem at hand through in house staff, ask consultants to carry out study and suggest alternatives. This could be related to product development, mapping competitiors, problems related to marketing including promotion, restructring or reviving a particular brand, understand market potential for certain category of products. This field is quite upbeat and fast growing.

What i have tried to highlight in these blogs is just the gist of what activities are supposed to be done if your opt for it as a career.

Career Option for Pharmacist : Product Management

Labels:

This is particularly useful to those pharmacists that have MBA as an additional degree. That does not mean other pharmacists cannot enter this field. Pharmacy graduates after BS Pharmacy or even after Master of Science in Pharmacy can opt Product Management as career option. This filed is related with the gamut of identifying the opportunities for promoting a company's product (medicines in this case), designing strategies for promoting these products that includes how to distribute them what channels to use and what points to highlight while promoting the products to doctors (as doctors are customers for pharmaceutical companies). It also includes working with medical representatives and assisting them in implementing the strategies that are designed more effectively. Pharmacists with flair for travelling and those who are good at designing strategies can opt for this field. To get into this field, one should (or shall i say must) have knowledge of working in the field as medical reperesentatives(sales) or as a marketing officer(marketing). Knowledge of working as medical representative is that you know the market characteristics very closely and keenly.

Food Causing Cancers

Labels:

Researches found out that some common foods that we eat everyday causes cancer when you grow old. I'm not say not to eat these food but eat in moderation.

1. Hot dogs

Because they are high in nitrates, the Cancer Prevention Coalition advises that children eat no more than 12 hot dogs a month. If you can't live without hot dogs, buy those made without sodium nitrate.

2. Processed meats and bacon

Also high in the same sodium nitrates found in hot dogs, bacon, and other processed meats raise the risk of heart disease. The saturated fat in bacon also contributes to cancer.

3. Doughnuts
Doughnuts are cancer-causing double trouble. First, they are made with white flour, sugar, and hydrogenated oils, then fried at high temperatures. Doughnuts, says Adams , may be the worst food you can possibly eat to raise your risk of cancer.

4. French fries

Like doughnuts, French fries are made with hydrogenated oils and then fried at high temperatures. They also contain cancer- causing acryl amides which occur during the frying process. They should be called cancer fries, not French fries, said Adams .

Pharmacy Industry

Labels:

Pharmacy is a major industry and it is one that really affects our daily lives. Each one of us is prone to sickness at some point of time or another. Thus, we have to occasionally run to the pharmacy to buy one kind of drug or another.

However, the world did not always have pharmacies. But as developments continued in the world of medicine by physicians and scientists from all parts of the globe, pharmacies began to develop. It became necessary for pharmacists to have a place from which they could operate. Thus, an expert pharmacist sat there preparing and selling medicines. However, the pharmacists of the twenty-first century are not always required to compound medicines. The drugs are brought completely ready from the pharma factories. The pharmacist has increasingly begun to appear less like a health professional and more like a retailer. As a result, these days we are seeing pharmacies being filled with technicians so that the pharmacist can deal with the patients.

Pharmacies today are of various kinds. There are the community pharmacies which have an eye on retail. Many of them do not confine themselves to stocking medicines. They begin stocking toiletries, chewing gum, and cosmetics as well. Then there are the hospital pharmacies which are located within hospital premises. Now, while the community pharmacy is more concerned with selling its stocks, the hospital pharmacy has much more work of a clinical nature. Preparation of emergency medicines is one of the jobs of the pharmacist at the hospital. She may also have to attend to patients giving them intravenous and intramuscular medication.

These two are the most generic kinds of pharmacies. But over the years, more specialist entities have been emerging. These include the clinical pharmacy, the compounding pharmacy, the consultant pharmacy, and the Internet pharmacy. The clinical pharmacy directly attends to patients who come there. The compounding pharmacy is a pharmacy which specializes in the making of drugs. The consultant pharmacist works as a medical consultant in medical institutions. This leaves us with the Internet pharmacy. It is yet another thing that we must thank the Internet revolution for.

The Internet pharmacy is a relatively new development and it concentrates on retail. So the next time you want to buy prednisone or femara, look for a reliable Internet pharmacy who will sell you the drug you require. And if you are having trouble finding the cheapest Internet pharmacy, take help from an online pharmacy pricer.

Pharmacokinetics has evolved from its origin into a complex discipline with numerous subspecialties and applications in patient management, drug development, and regulatory issues. This expansion has made it difficult for any one individual to become a full-fledged expert in all areas. Fulfilling the need for a wide-ranging guide to the many existing subspecialties in this field, Pharmacokinetics in Drug Discovery and Development details the different areas in the field providing the ideal comprehensive, quick access text and reference. After an introduction of basic principles, the book is divided into sections that cover industrial and regulatory applications, clinical applications, and research applications. The following sections cover such topics as PK/PD approaches, clinical pharmacokinetic monitoring, population pharmacokinetics, linear systems approaches, and more. Fourteen authors, each an expert in his/her area of expertise, provide an extensive background into the subspeciality with emphasis on the section's theme. Covering the many sub-disciplines and providing pharmacokinetic concepts, terminology, and approaches, Pharmacokinetics in Drug Discovery and Development serves as a resource for professionals throughout this field.

REPUBLIC ACT NO. 9502 : UNIVERSALLY ACCESSIBLE CHEAPER AND QUALITY MEDICINES ACT OF 2008

Labels:

President Gloria Macapagal – Arroyo signed last June 6, 2008 Republic Act No. 9502, an act providing for cheaper and quality medicines. It is known as the UNIVERSALLY ACCESSIBLE CHEAPER AND QUALITY MEDICINES ACT OF 2008.

RA 9502 compliments the Generics Act of 1998, for it also requires and ensures the production of an adequate supply, distribution, use and acceptance of drugs and medicines identified by their generic name.

The new law has four objectives:

1. Strengthen competition by amending the intellectual property code to:

  • Allow the parallel importation of patented medicines from other countries where these are more affordable
  • Prohibit the grant of new patents based only on newly discovered uses of a known drug substance
  • Allow local generics firms to test, produce and register their generic versions of patented drugs , and
  • Allow the government use of patented drugs when the public interest is at stake.
2. Give the President the power to set price ceiling on various drugs upon the recommendation of the secretary of health.

3. Strengthen the Bureau of Food and Drug to ensure the safety of the medicines, by allowing it to retain its revenues to upgrade its facilities, equipment and human resources, and

4. Ensure the availability of affordable medicines by requiring drug outlets to carry a variety of brands for each drug including those sourced from parallel importation, to give consumers more choices.

The implementing rules and regulation are still being prepared and will be available only after 5 months.

Pest Control Programs for Good Manufacturing Practice ( GMP ):

Labels:

Basic pest control in the food processing plant is an essential prerequisite food safety program. Unfortunately, many processors have never established a systematic, written pest control program. This fact sheet outlines the pests of concern and steps that the small processor can take to start a pest control program.

All meat and poultry processing facilities, regardless of size, must have a written Sanitation program.GMPs (Good Manufacturing Practices) specified in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) clearly specify that pests cannot be present
in the food, drug-processing environment

The pest control program is a stand-alone program and is also a part of the plant’s food safety system. Most small food plants must decide whether to maintain a pest control program themselves or contract the program to a pest control company. There are positive and negative aspects of each approach.

Many small processing facilities hire a pest control company because the processor lacks the personnel and expertise to run such a program. Of course, a pest control contractor should be reputable and have proper training and experience. A pest control contractor must provide records and reports to the processor verifying that the program is effective and operating successfully. This verification is usually done through visual inspection for pests and/or evidence of pests in the plant or product. The processor must maintain these records with the plant’s hazard analysis records to prove that the contracted pest control program is effective. The verification records should include evidence of contractor training and certification to apply pesticides in a food-manufacturing environment, and evidence that the pesticides are approved for such use.

Items included in a pest control program
1. Pest control procedures — The activities performed to control each type of pest. The written procedures should be detailed and include frequency of action.
2. Recordkeeping — The documentation of each performed activity. These records must be accurate, up-to-date, and include inspection for evidence of pests in each plant area.
3. Responsible individuals — The person(s) who are charged with performing pest control procedures and recordkeeping. Also, the supervisor responsible for signing off on reviewed records.
4. Deviation — Evidence of a pest problem is a subjective determination that requires expertise. For example, periodically finding a cockroach under a trashcan may be acceptable, but finding many cockroaches would be a deviation. A deviation has occurred when an allowable limit has been exceeded.
5. Corrective measures — These are written action steps in the plan that will be performed if there is a deviation from the pest control program. Often, they may include increasing control procedures, retraining of employees, cleaning up the area, etc.
6. Verification and validation — Written scientific evidence that the procedures are effective at controlling pests. This material is often available from chemical, trap, and pest control equipment makers. Also, verification is documentation of visual inspection for evidence of pests.

Canned Meat Products a threat to one's Health

Labels:

I have seen the news today in ABS CBN news channel that National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) will be currently testing chinese canned goods for melamine contamination. These products were tested by private testing laboratory to contain some trace elements of Cadmium and lead. This is good news for me because I always wanted to verify the integrity and quality of these products. Everytime I shop in Grocery store, I never forget to get one of these products in the shelves. As I search on in the internet, I have found out that some of these chinese products are recalled from Hongkong because it contains nitrofuran. But as of today, because of this news I will refrain from buying and eating these products from china. I dont want to risk my health just to satisfy my taste buds.

Tilapia: a local fish is dangerous to health

Labels: ,

I was surfing today in when i came across this article. Here how is goes ...

If you eat fish, chances are you've recently eaten tilapia, one of the most highly consumed types of fish in the United States. You might want to change the menu.

Researchers from Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center have concluded that farm-raised tilapia--the kind typically sold in supermarkets--contains very low levels of the beneficial omega-3 fatty acids and very high levels of the potentially dangerous omega-6 fatty acids.

How dangerous is it? Eating tilapia could be far worse for your heart health than eating a hamburger, doughnuts or even pork bacon!

The double whammy of low levels of omega-3 fatty acids and high levels of omega-6 fatty acids could be potentially dangerous for some people with heart disease, arthritis, asthma and other allergic and auto-immune diseases that are particularly vulnerable to an "exaggerated inflammatory response." Inflammation is known to cause damage to blood vessels, the heart, lung and joint tissues, skin and the digestive tract.

"In the United States, tilapia has shown the biggest gains in popularity among seafood, and this trend is expected to continue as consumption is projected to increase from 1.5 million tons in 2003 to 2.5 million tons by 2010," write the Wake Forest researchers in an article published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association.

The team discovered that farm-raised tilapia, as well as farmed catfish, "have several fatty acid characteristics that would generally be considered by the scientific community as detrimental." Tilapia has higher levels of potentially detrimental long-chain omega-6 fatty acids than 80-percent-lean hamburger, doughnuts and even pork bacon. "For individuals who are eating fish as a method to control inflammatory diseases such as heart disease, it is clear from these numbers that tilapia is not a good choice," the researchers write. "All other nutritional content aside, the inflammatory potential of hamburger and pork bacon is lower than the average serving of farmed tilapia."

The heart healthy benefits of omega-3 fatty acids, found in abundance in salmon and trout, have been well documented--so much so that the American Heart Association recommends everyone eat at least two servings of fish a week. Just don't make one of those servings tilapia since it could actually do your body more harm than good.

--From the Editors at Netscape

Minimally I eat this kind of fish and especially the belly part of any fish. Belly of the fish especially the ones in bangus are very rich in cholesterol. So my advise to not to eat too much of these and most probably the steamed and grill but not the fried ones, cause it pays you to accumulate cholesterol in your body.

Erectile Dysfunction and Sildenafil Citrate

Labels:

Sex may not be the most important thing in life. But to most men, it’s up there. So don’t let erection problems keep you from a satisfying sex life. Learn about a condition called erectile dysfunction, or ED.

Erectile Dysfunction (ED) is when a man has problems getting or maintaining an erection long enough for sex. It happens when not enough blood flows to the penis.

ED isn’t the same for all men. Some men aren’t able to get an erection at all. Others can get one, but it’s not hard enough for sex. And others get a hard erection but lose it before or during sex.

ED is a medical condition. So in most cases, erections will not improve without treatment.

A common issue
ED is more common than you might think. More than half of all men over 40 have some difficulty getting and maintaining an erection. The fact is, guys at any age can experience ED.

Treatment options

There are many treatments for erectile dysfunction (ED). The most common is oral medication, or tablets.

Of all the ED tablets, VIAGRA is the one doctors prescribe most. It has been shown to significantly improve erections for men with ED

Sildenafil Citrate an oral medication for erectile dysfunction (ED). It helps most men with ED improve their erections. That means they are able to achieve harder erections.

Getting an erection is only half the story
Maintaining an erection is just as important as getting one. Sildenafil Citrate can help with both. This can lead to a more satisfying sexual experience with your partner.

Who can take Sildenafil Citrate
Sildenafil Citrate has an established safety profile of over 10 years. It has been shown to work safely and effectively in men with ED. This includes:

  • Men of all ages
  • Men who have difficulty all the time or just some of the time
  • Men with other health issues such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and depression
Find out if Sildenafil is right for you. Speak to your doctor and visit your nearest Pharmacy. They can tell you if you have ED. And can recommend an effective treatment.

Most Filipino men don't visit their doctors to consult about their problem regarding Erectile Dysfunction. Instead, they buy these medication over the counter and fly-by-night pharmacies. Its is not recommended to use this drug without a consult from your medical practitioner simple because it can aggrevate other disease like heart problems.

Every pinoy pharmacist should know that Sildenafil Citrate popularly known as Vigra is a prescription drug. I shout to all pharmacist out there please do not dispense this medication without a prescription.

J-1 US Visa for Students and Professional

Labels:

I attended today an orientation about US Internship.Consulting firm offers a clinical research internship in the Atlanta, Geogia. J-1 Visa is applied through these methods. Hiring an consulting firm and pay appropriate fee usually about $3000-4000 for the Immigration laywers and $500 for the agency.

The difference between regular and internship work is that some companies sponsoring home, travel and food accomodation for internship program. J-1 visa usually is granted in 3-4 weeks depending on the application.

As a working professional, I don't really recommend this kind of career path going through the internship and paying some huge fees just to learn the Educational and Culture of other country. These type of visa usually last for 12 months which can be extended up to 18 months. After that you are required to go back to your country of origin. You cant apply for another type of vsa. Well, what will you do after that? These, I think are the basic questions to answer before getting into signing contract and paying extensive fees.

If you have more questions, you can post your comments. Thanks.

The nonconformance report 101

Labels:

I'm pissed off today as the result of our meeting with a BIG multi-national pharmaceutical company. I'll just state this in filipino/tagalog language since this is a pinoy site. Kaninang umaga tinawag kami ng ahente namin may meeting daw sa isang customer namin tungkol sa NCR(nonconformance) na nangyari noong mga nakaraang lingo. Nagrerequest daw ang QA manager para meeting daw namin sila. Aware of the situation about the NCR, I was forcefully sent to meet with them. Dalawa kaming pharmacist at yung sales agent namin.

I started the meeting with a grappling voice.

Nakakairita talga! Na shock ako sa pangyayari iyon. Biruin mo, sabihin ba naman.. "Excuse me, Are you from Quality control?" sabay ngiting parang sinasabing ang bobo mo hindi mo ba alam un?.

I dont really know on the nutrition facts of our local milk produc compare from imported. But with the same flavor, taste and nutrients, I'll rather go for Carabao's milk. These milk are not processed and free from preservatives.

Scorpion in the Kitchen wall

Labels:

Last night i was surfing the net and break off to get some water to drink. When I switch on the lights and go to the sink. I came across to see a scorpion near the sink. Yes, you heard me right, SCORPION in the Kitchen. Hey, this is Philippines! What in the world a scorpion doing in my kitchen. So i get me IXUS camera to take a few photos of the scorpion resting on the wall. I climbed on the over the sink to take more shots of it. The scorpion is resting above the tiles. I just got a plastic cup and force the scorpion to move into the cup. After several attempts, I successfully put the small scorpion inside. I'm not sure what kind of specie of scorpion is this but surely i'll try to research more of this in later time. I'll just put it near my computer and observe.
